In Morocco, a decision has been made to name one of the kingdom's key transport arteries after former US President Donald J. Trump. This was officially announced by King Mohammed VI in a letter published by the state news agency MAP.
The highway, which is 1,055 kilometers long, connects the city of Tiznit with the city of Dakhla, located in the disputed region of Western Sahara. This large-scale infrastructure project will now be associated with the name of the American politician.
Recognition of Sovereignty as the Reason for the Gesture
In his message, the monarch highly praised Donald Trump's decision, made in 2020, to recognize Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. The King emphasized that this step "will forever remain in the memory of the Moroccan people" and gave an "unprecedented impetus" to the development of bilateral relations between the countries.
"As a sign of deep gratitude, I have decided to name one of the country's most important highways after you," Mohammed VI wrote, addressing Trump.
The decision to recognize Morocco's rights to Western Sahara was made by Trump at the end of his first term. This move became part of a broader agreement that helped Morocco — a key US ally in the region — normalize relations with Israel.
Donald Trump's Reaction
The former US President reacted promptly to the news. In his post on the Truth Social platform, Donald Trump thanked King Mohammed VI for this gesture. He also expressed hope that in the future he would be able to personally drive along this entire "magnificent highway".
Regional Political Context
Western Sahara remains one of the most complex geopolitical knots in North Africa. The territory, rich in natural resources and comparable in size to the United Kingdom, is the subject of a dispute between Morocco and the independence movement, which is supported by Algeria. The United Nations still classifies this region as a non-self-governing territory.
