For Ukrainian pensioners living in mountainous climates, a special financial support mechanism is provided. However, unlike standard payments, this allowance is not accrued automatically. To receive additional funds, you must independently confirm your status and submit a corresponding application to the Pension Fund.

Who is eligible for the mountain allowance

The right to receive a monthly top-up is granted to citizens who permanently reside or officially work in settlements with mountain status. Geographically, these territories are concentrated in four regions of Ukraine: Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Chernivtsi.

It is important to note that internally displaced persons (IDPs) may also be eligible for the payment. The main condition is actual residence in such a settlement and compliance with all requirements established by legislation.

Conditions for appointing the payment

In order for the allowance to be appointed, the applicant must confirm their presence in the mountainous area. Key criteria include:

  • Continuous residence or work in a mountainous area for at least six months.
  • No long-term stay abroad during this period.
  • No payment of the single social contribution (ESC) at a workplace in another settlement not belonging to the mountainous area.

The first step in the application process is obtaining a certificate of residence in a mountainous settlement. This is done at the local self-government body at the place of residence.

Payment amount in 2026

Many mistakenly believe that the allowance is calculated as a percentage of the pension itself. In fact, the mountain top-up amounts to 20% of the subsistence minimum established for persons who have lost their ability to work.

According to calculations for 2026, the subsistence minimum for this category of citizens is 2361 hryvnias. Consequently, the monthly mountain allowance will be approximately 472 hryvnias. This payment is additional and does not cancel other allowances due to the pensioner.

Possibility of combining with other payments

Pensioners can receive several types of allowances simultaneously. For example, the mountain top-up is summed with age-related payments. The Pension Fund may automatically accrue an age allowance if the basic pension does not exceed the limit established by law:

  • For citizens aged 70 to 74, the payment is up to 300 hryvnias.
  • From 75 to 79 years old — up to 456 hryvnias.
  • After 80 years old — up to 570 hryvnias per month.

How to increase the pension through deferral

Ukrainians who have reached retirement age have the opportunity to significantly increase the amount of future payments if they consciously postpone retirement and continue their professional activity. According to the Pension Fund of Ukraine, the accrual mechanism looks as follows:

For every full month of deferral during the first 5 years, the pension increases by 0.5%. This means an increase of 6% per year or 12% in two years. If the appointment of the pension is postponed for more than 5 years, the coefficient increases: each additional month adds already 0.75% to the payment. In particular, postponing retirement for 6 years will allow increasing the monthly allowance by 54%.
