Potatoes remain one of the most traditional and important crops in Ukrainian agriculture. However, the figures often found in the information space regarding the consumption of this vegetable may not correspond to reality. A joint study by the Center for Food and Land Use Research (KSE) and the Ukrainian Association of Potato Producers (UAPP) sheds light on the real scale of the market and consumer habits.
Real Consumption vs. Myths
Online statistics often circulate stating that the average Ukrainian consumes between 120 and 140 kg of potatoes per year. The UAPP notes that such data raises serious questions regarding their relevance and the methodology of their collection. Experts emphasize that reliable statistics are necessary to understand the real state of the industry and make well-founded decisions.
According to new data, the real figure for fresh potato consumption per person is 68 kg per year. This is almost twice as little as previously claimed. Nevertheless, the popularity of the vegetable remains colossal: from 94% to 100% of respondents in various groups consume potatoes or products made from them.
Age and Geography: Who Eats the Most
The study revealed a clear dependence of consumption on age and place of residence. With age, the share of people including potatoes in their diet increases, reaching 100% in the group over 65 years old. The only notable exception was young people in Kyiv (18–35 years), where consumption was recorded at 84%.
The geographical breakdown also shows significant differences:
- The highest volume of consumption is observed in rural areas — an average of 7.7 kg per month.
- In cities, this figure is 4.7 kg per month.
- The least potatoes are consumed in Kyiv — only 4.1 kg per month.
Household Self-Sufficiency
An important aspect of the Ukrainian potato market is the high share of self-sufficiency. The study showed that 12.4 million Ukrainians grow potatoes for their own consumption. This indicates that a significant part of the population does not rely solely on store shelves but stocks the vegetable themselves.
Experts note that the age of respondents regarding potato growing has only an indirect influence. The full results of the study, which will be published later, will allow for an even more accurate assessment of the market structure and the prospects for the development of the industry.
