NASA has presented the public with an impressive series of images capturing the gradual approach of the Psyche spacecraft to the Red Planet. The images, compiled into a sequence, demonstrate the moment of approach that occurred in May 2026. This visual series allows viewers to see how Mars changes its appearance in the probe's field of view as the distance decreases.

From a Thin Crescent to Going Off-Screen

In the initial stages of filming, Mars appears in the frame as a tiny, barely noticeable crescent located in the center of the composition. This is due to the fact that the spacecraft was at a significant distance from the planet. As the probe moved forward, the illuminated part of the planet visually increased. By the end of the sequence, Mars had become so large that it began to go beyond the camera's field of view.

Technical Features of the Filming

The material was obtained using a multispectral instrument installed on board the Psyche spacecraft. The specific appearance of the planet—a thin crescent instead of a full disk—is due to the high phase angle. The camera captured specifically the side of the planet from which sunlight was reflected back towards the flying probe.

After recording the approach phase, the probe performed a gravity assist maneuver and flew in close proximity to the surface, obtaining a series of high-resolution images. The mission team combined frames from all stages: from approach to maximum proximity and subsequent departure, creating a complete video sequence of the flyby.

Objective of the Maneuver

The encounter with Mars was not an end in itself, but an important stage of the route. The gravity assist maneuver was necessary to correct the trajectory of the Psyche spacecraft. Its ultimate destination is the asteroid Psyche—a massive metallic body that NASA plans to study during a separate mission.
