A unprecedented incident has been recorded in Germany, which authorities have already classified as a "new scenario of hybrid threat." At Leipzig/Halle Airport, where the Ukrainian airline Antonov is based, a modified drone packed with explosives was discovered and neutralized. The incident occurred in the immediate vicinity of the strategically important An-124 "Ruslan" cargo aircraft.
"New Level of Danger": Statement by Authorities
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, who interrupted his vacation to respond to the situation, called the event a paradigm shift in the country's security. According to him, the appearance of an explosive-laden drone in an airport is a qualitatively new challenge that requires a review of existing protection protocols.
"Cases of drone detection and threats from them, particularly in a hybrid context, are already known to us from the past. The fact that a drone armed with explosives ended up in an airport is a new scenario," the minister emphasized.
Dobrindt also noted the high level of professionalism with which this incident was planned and executed. In the opinion of the head of the Interior Ministry, the people behind this possess deep technical knowledge and experience working with explosives, which rules out the version of an "amateur approach" or a coincidence.
Investigation Details and Search for a Second Drone
Specialized units are investigating the incident: the Central Unit for Combating Extremism of Saxony under the General Prosecutor's Office of Dresden and the Police Center for Combating Terrorism and Extremism of the State Criminal Police Office of Saxony.
Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster reported ongoing searches on the airport grounds. In particular, special services are looking for debris from a possible second drone. This gives grounds to believe that the attack could have been complex and provided for the simultaneous destruction of several targets.
On the night of August 5, the operation of Leipzig/Halle Airport was temporarily suspended. After the discovery of a suspicious object near the runway, several flights were diverted to other airports. German investigators are checking all versions, including the possible involvement of Russian special services.
Situation on the Ground: Antonov and Diplomatic Response
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, no one was injured as a result of the incident, and the aircraft of the Ukrainian company were not damaged. Diplomats and consuls of the Embassy of Ukraine in Germany are in constant contact with German law enforcement agencies and representatives of Antonov.
German authorities have already begun work on implementing appropriate anti-drone protection measures to ensure readiness for similar attacks in the future. All speculation regarding the origin of the explosives, the drone's construction, and its control is now part of a closed investigation.
