On the night of August 20, 2026, the capital of Ukraine came under a massive ballistic missile strike, which, according to available data, was launched by the armed forces of the Russian Federation. As of the morning, rescue services continue to work at multiple impact sites: the city has recorded numerous fires, damage to residential and non-residential buildings, shattered windows, and vehicle fires. It has been officially confirmed that five people were killed in the attack and a further 23 were injured, although emergency services stress that the final figures may be revised as the rubble is cleared.

Scale of Destruction in Three Districts

Impacts, destruction, and fires have been recorded in three districts of Kyiv — Svytoshyn, Darnytsia, and Solomiansk. One of the impacts hit the territory of an industrial facility: rescuers contained fires in two warehouse buildings of 500 and 1,000 square meters, and at another address — in yet another 500-square-meter warehouse. One dead body was found at the scene of this incident, and rescuers are currently extricating another person from under the rubble.

Housing Stock and Medical Facilities

Significant damage has also been inflicted on the housing stock: in one of the nine-story residential buildings, the eighth and ninth floors were destroyed, and the fire engulfed levels seven through nine. At other addresses, windows were blown out in residential buildings and in a medical facility building; cars, garages, and a shop caught fire. The fire in the garages has been extinguished, and at a separate address in a medical facility, where windows were shattered and a utility room and a car caught fire, the flames have also been put out. Earlier reports stated that a children's hospital was damaged in the strike.

Trapped People and Rescuer Operations

At a separate address, the impact hit a non-residential object, where a fire broke out in warehouse premises and vehicles covering an area of about 1,000 square meters; there, rescuers brought one person out and handed him over to medics. In two residential buildings and in a school shelter in one of the districts, people remain trapped. Units of the State Emergency Service (SES) and all relevant emergency services continue to work at the scenes, conducting reconnaissance of the rubble and extinguishing the remaining fire spots.

Contradictory Data

There is a discrepancy between the official figures and the wording of a number of media outlets. Officially, five dead and 23 injured have been named, while emergency services explicitly state that the number of casualties and the scale of destruction "may be revised." At the same time, some TV channels in their reports use phrasing about a "rapidly growing number of dead and injured" and "many dead," without tying it to a specific figure. In addition, the sources simultaneously mention a "children's hospital" and a "medical facility" with a utility room — this could be either the same object described from different angles or two different addresses, which requires further verification.

Kyiv Oblast Without Power

The strike hit not only the capital but also Kyiv Oblast. In Boryspil (Brovary), a man was killed, and the entire city community was left without electricity. Power outages have also been recorded in several districts of Kyiv; energy workers are already investigating the causes of the failures and working to restore power supply. The final picture of the attack's aftermath will be clarified as the rescue services complete their work.
