On Ukraine's domestic market, the price of onions has been rising actively since the start of the current week. According to data from the EastFruit project, cited by RBC-Ukraine, a positive price trend in this segment has formed against the backdrop of high trading activity by wholesale companies, which are buying the vegetable both for current sales and for storage. It is precisely the combination of growing demand and a shrinking supply of high-quality product that has become the main driver of the price increase.
Week's figures: +21% and a 13–20 UAH/kg range
As of September 10, 2026, most Ukrainian farmers are ready to ship onions at no less than 13–20 hryvnias per kilogram. EastFruit analysts note that this is on average 21% higher than at the end of the previous working week. Thus, over a short period the wholesale price range has shifted noticeably upward, which is already reflected in market participants' expectations for the coming weeks.
Limited supply and storage stockpiling
The key factor allowing farmers to hold and raise prices is the limited supply of high-quality vegetables. EastFruit specialists link this to the fact that producers are striving to store maximum volumes of produce rather than sell it immediately. As a result, fewer high-quality batches remain on the market available for immediate shipment, which intensifies price pressure.
Comparison with last year: a 32% gap
Significantly, onion prices in Ukraine today are already considerably higher than they were during this period last year. According to EastFruit, in early September 2025 farmers were selling this product 32% cheaper than now. The year-on-year dynamics thus confirm a steady rise in the vegetable's cost against the backdrop of changing supply and demand structures.
Analysts' forecast: a temporary price hike
Despite the current growth, key market players consider this price increase a temporary phenomenon. The argument is simple: the onion harvest in Ukrainian farms is still ongoing, and its supply on the market will remain fairly high until mid-October. This means that after the active phase of storage stockpiling is complete, price pressure, according to analysts, may ease.
Retail: what buyers pay in stores
At the retail level, the cost of onions, according to data from the "Minfin" portal as of September 10, 2026, depends on the variety and the specific retail chain. In the "ATB Market" grocery supermarket chain, prices for various onion offerings also vary depending on the type of vegetable. The final price for the end consumer, therefore, is formed not only by the 13–20 UAH/kg wholesale price range but also by retail markups, variety, and the specific store's assortment.
