The era of purely software-based interaction with artificial intelligence is taking physical form. OpenAI, in collaboration with design studio Work Louder, has unveiled its first hardware product — the compact Codex Micro keyboard. The device is already available for pre-order and is designed to serve as a specialized tool for managing the Codex programming agent system.
A physical interface for digital agents
Unlike standard peripheral devices, the Codex Micro is designed with the specific needs of working with AI assistants in mind. The design emphasizes visual feedback: the unit features six translucent keys with built-in LED indicators. Real-time lighting effects display the current status of Codex agents, allowing developers to instantly assess task execution.
The device’s functionality goes beyond simple input. It includes additional programmable buttons that can be configured for critical actions: confirming or rejecting code changes, activating voice input, and other specific operations. Navigation between workflows is handled by a joystick, while a rotary dial allows for fine-tuning parameters, such as switching the AI’s reasoning levels.
Customization and ecosystem
A key feature of the Codex Micro is its customizability. The package includes interchangeable keycaps, giving users flexibility to tailor the controls to their specific tasks and preferences.
The gadget’s release coincides with the transformation of the Codex app into a “superapp,” combining the functionality of ChatGPT, Codex itself, and the ChatGPT Work agent. While the software is fully functional without additional accessories, the Codex Micro aims to significantly simplify navigation within the expanded interface and boost productivity.
Price and availability
The device is now available for purchase through official OpenAI and Work Louder channels. The Codex Micro is priced at $230 (approximately 17,850 rubles). The product page notes that production of the keyboard module is limited, underscoring its status as an exclusive tool for professionals.
Experts note that the Codex Micro is the company’s first standalone hardware product, released separately from the anticipated smart device. Earlier reports indicated that OpenAI, in partnership with legendary designer Jony Ive, plans to unveil a more comprehensive device later this year, but the Codex Micro already addresses the need for tactile code control.
