Amid the global artificial intelligence boom and the rapid growth in demand for computing power, US-based Point2 Technology has announced the completion of a $136 million Series B funding round. The investment is aimed at commercializing next-generation cables designed to solve the critical "bottleneck" problem in modern data centers. The round was led by LB Investment, joined by key industry players including NVIDIA, Arm, Bosch Ventures, Molex, and Maverick Silicon.

Wired Connections as the Main Obstacle to AI

According to expert assessments presented in the funding report, traditional copper connections inside server racks are becoming the primary barrier to further scaling of artificial intelligence systems. As system bandwidth grows to terabit speeds, the efficiency of data transmission between processors and servers takes center stage. Existing infrastructure cannot cope with the physical limitations of copper, which is slowing down the development of computing clusters.

Technological Superiority: 10 Times Further, 5 Times Lighter

Point2 Technology's development offers a radical solution to this problem. The new cables provide 10 times greater data transmission distance at the same cost as traditional copper counterparts. Furthermore, implementing this technology reduces the mass of connections by 5 times and the volume occupied by cables by 2 times. This is critical for the dense packing of server racks, where every cubic centimeter and gram of weight matters for cooling efficiency and overall performance.

Energy Savings and Accelerated Computing

Building modern data centers (DCs) requires colossal investments, amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars, including costs for accelerators, electricity, and cooling systems. In the context of a global power shortage, saving every watt on inter-component connections becomes a strategic advantage. The freed-up power can be redirected directly to computing tasks, accelerating neural network training and data processing.

Investor Strategy and Future Plans

Paul Williamson, Arm's Vice President of Strategic Investments, noted that AI infrastructure requires the refinement of the entire technology stack—from compute units to memory and connections. The raised funds will be directed towards accelerating the market launch of Active RF Cables, as well as e-Tube solutions designed for direct integration into chipsets and server racks. This will allow for the creation of a seamless ecosystem for high-performance computing.
