Paris, August 17, 2026. — French tech giant Mistral AI has made a strategic leap in the fight for Europe's technological sovereignty. The announcement on August 11 marked a turning point for the industry: the company confirmed multi-year commitments with five of Europe's largest corporations — ASML, Amadeus, Capgemini, Caisse des Dépôts, and CMA CGM. These agreements guarantee Mistral AI stable demand for computing resources to be deployed in the coming years.

European Compute Units Mechanism and Pre-order Strategy

The key tool in this strategy is the long-term reservation mechanism called European Compute Units (ECU). This innovative approach allows Mistral AI to secure financing and plan infrastructure construction based on guaranteed demand rather than current sales. It is important to note that the signed contracts do not mean ready-made turnkey data centers exist today. The discussion concerns future capacity: clients are reserving resources in advance that will come into operation as construction and equipment procurement are completed.

This model reduces risks for investors and ensures European companies have access to advanced neural networks without dependence on American providers. For Mistral, it means the ability to scale with a clear understanding of market needs, minimizing downtime for expensive equipment.

Ambitious Roadmap: From 200 MW to 1 GW

The scale of the planned infrastructure is impressive. According to data obtained from The Next Web and Heise, Mistral AI aims to reach 200 MW of available capacity by the end of 2027. This will be only an intermediate stage. The company's final goal is to deploy infrastructure with a capacity of 1 GW by 2030.

Achieving the 1 GW mark will require colossal efforts in logistics, construction, and energy. The company will not only have to build the necessary data centers but also ensure their reliable power supply, which remains a complex task given the growing demand for electricity in Europe. Nevertheless, the presence of contracts with players like ASML and CMA CGM serves as a strong signal to energy companies and construction contractors.

Regional Nodes and Data Control

In addition to physical scaling, Mistral AI is expanding its software offering. The company announced the launch of regional execution nodes, which will allow clients to receive more predictable latency and a high level of service. This solution is critical for European corporations working with sensitive data that, under GDPR regulations, must not leave the continent.

As part of this strategy, Mistral AI has also opened its platform for hosting third-party open models. The first guest on the new infrastructure will be the GLM-5.2 model from the Chinese company Z.ai. This decision demonstrates Mistral's pragmatic approach: creating a neutral European platform where various models can coexist, provided that computations take place on European territory under European control.

Context of Partnership with Microsoft

These steps by Mistral AI logically complement the strategic partnership with Microsoft, which was expanded in July 2026. As previously reported, the cooperation is aimed at providing regulated industries (healthcare, finance) with access to advanced AI models that they can control. The infrastructure mentioned in the contracts with ASML and other giants will become the physical foundation for this digital sovereignty, allowing Europe to compete on equal footing with the US and China in the AI race.
