The security of high-ніципа Russian officials continues to undergo unprecedented changes amid growing threats and a shifting geopolitical landscape. During a recent trip to military exercises in the Chelyabinsk region, the motorcade of Russian President Vladimir Putin was accompanied by a military helicopter, marking a new step in the escalation of personal protection measures. Earlier, specialized electronic warfare (EW) systems and armored vehicles with mounted anti-aircraft machine guns had already been spotted within the convoy.

Chronicle of Motorcade Reinforcement

The security of the Russian leadership noticeably transforms from trip to trip, demonstrating a trend toward the militarization of the escort. In the spring, during a visit to Astana, observers recorded a vehicle equipped with an EW system, as well as an armored car with a designated position for a machine gunner on the roof. At the time, the limousine was escorted by about two dozen cars and over a dozen motorcyclists, and local security services confirmed the deployment of military aviation.

In the fall, the arsenal of protective assets continued to expand. During a September visit to Vladivostok, a pickup truck with an anti-aircraft machine gun traveled within the convoy, and now continuous air cover has been added to the ground forces. Rosavtodor imposed strict restrictions from October 2 to 5, completely closing the federal highways of the Chelyabinsk region to regular traffic during the exercises and the delegation's visit.

Internal FSO Security Measures

The tightening of security precautions is not limited to road motorcades. In late August, it became known about an unprecedented expansion of the Federal Protective Service (FSO) staff. The number of FSO personnel was increased for the fourth time, exceeding 800 employees, which is about a hundred more than four years ago. Such steps indicate a total overhaul of security protocols at the highest state level.

External Triggers and Expert Assessments

According to reputable Western publications, in particular the Financial Times, such a radical restructuring of security began after high-profile events on the international arena, including the elimination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The Kremlin became seriously concerned that modern artificial intelligence tools are capable of analyzing millions of hours of video data in real time and calculating target coordinates. It was the threat of algorithmic analysis and unmanned systems that forced Russian intelligence services to completely reformat the motorcade protection system.
