EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius stated that Vladimir Putin himself brought the war onto Russian territory by escalating the situation and receiving a mirror response from Ukraine. In his words, the next targets could be the headquarters of Russian intelligence services.

According to ISW, Putin has set a new deadline — December 31, 2026 — for the capture of Donetsk Oblast, although since 2022 he has failed to meet any of the 15 similar deadlines. Russia controls about 79.9% of the region's territory.
