At the Snapdragon Summit conference, Qualcomm announced two next-generation flagship mobile platforms at once — the classic Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Both system-on-chips are built on a modern 2-nanometer process, making them among the first mass-market mobile chips to use such a fine process node. According to the manufacturer, this is a "powerful across-the-board first mobile CPU for 5 GHz, built for the era of agentic AI," and both platforms are designed to become the foundation for premium Android gadgets of the next generation.
CPU Architecture and Cache
The heart of both chips is the 8-core Oryon central processor, in which two primary cores can be boosted to a record 5 GHz for the mobile segment. To efficiently allocate resources when handling complex single-threaded tasks, the platform features 16 MB of Flex Cache dynamic memory. It is precisely the combination of high clock speed and enlarged cache that the company positions as the key advantage of the new generation in tasks where single-threaded performance matters.
Graphics, Neural Processor, and Image Processing
The Adreno graphics module is 35% faster compared to the previous generation, delivering a significant boost to frame processing in games. The updated neural processing unit (NPU) increased the speed of machine learning algorithm processing by 14%, while its energy efficiency grew by 20%. The Spectra image signal processor gained support for native 8K video recording at 30 frames per second, and it can also process photos with a resolution of up to 320 MP on a single camera or shoot on three 64 MP modules with zero shutter lag.
Connectivity and Wireless Standards
Communications are handled by the new Snapdragon X105 5G modem, supporting sub-6GHz and mmWave bands. The chip also implements Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology and supports the new Bluetooth 6 and Wi-Fi 8 wireless standards, expanding possibilities for smart home, keyless access, and high-speed local data exchange.
What the Extreme Gen 6 Version Adds
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 version is built on the same architecture but offers expanded capabilities for entertainment and AI workloads. It supports local running of AI models with more than 30 billion parameters, features 18 MB of high-performance memory, and allows recording video in 8K at 60 frames per second or slow-motion 4K at 240 frames. For gamers, the graphics processor has been equipped with special Matrix Cores, providing image scaling and AI-based frame generation.
First Devices and Release Timing
The first confirmed smartphone based on the new platform will be the Motorola Signature 27, with a full rollout of devices on these processors expected as early as next year. Thus, Qualcomm cements its position as a supplier of flagship mobile platforms, shifting the focus from pure clock performance to local AI and multimedia capabilities.
