On August 12, 2026, a large-scale special operation took place in Odesa on Hlovan Family Street (formerly Ilf and Petrov Street). Fighters from the Corps of Operational and Surprise Actions (KORD) of the Main Directorate of the National Police detained a 50-year-old local resident who had barricaded himself in an apartment and threatened to use small arms and a combat grenade.
Timeline of the confrontation
The incident began with the arrival of an investigative and operational group to conduct a sanctioned search. The basis was a criminal case regarding illegal handling of weapons and ammunition. The man refused to open the door despite the presentation of a court order. Specialists from the State Emergency Service (SES) were involved to breach the premises.
After the door was opened, the suspect declared his readiness to use an assault rifle and detonate a grenade. Due to the threat to the lives of residents of the multi-apartment building, a special police plan was activated. The leadership of the National Police and KORD special forces fighters arrived at the scene.
Forceful stage and detention
After hours of negotiations that yielded no results, the special forces conducted a raid on the premises. Around 20:00, the man was neutralized and detained without the use of lethal force. As a result of the operation, no civilians or law enforcement officers were injured.
Investigative actions continue at the scene. The seized weapons and ammunition have been sent for forensic ballistics and explosives technical expertise. The issue of selecting a preventive measure in the form of detention is being resolved.
Legal qualification
The actions of the detainee are qualified under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons) and Article 345 (threat or violence against a law enforcement body). Such crimes are punishable by imprisonment for a term of up to seven years.
