A Ukrainian search expedition has discovered the remains of about 30 people at a cemetery in the village of Lasków, Lublin Voivodeship, Poland. These are Ukrainians who died during the attack by the Home Army (Armia Krajowa) and Peasant Battalions in March 1944.

Historical context and the scale of the tragedy in Lasków

According to historical data, more than 300 people were killed during the mass murder of Ukrainians in Lasków on March 10, 1944. Researchers from Ukraine and Poland have established the names of 327 villagers who died that year. At the same time, some historians cite a higher death toll of about 350 people. The final number of victims can be determined after further historical and search investigations.

Search operations and official permits

The search operations are carried out by order of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory and are provided by the utility company «Dolia», which received the appropriate permission from the Polish side on August 31, 2026. Svyatoslav Sheremeta, head of the «Dolia» enterprise, noted that preliminary search results confirm the testimonies of former residents of Lasków who managed to survive.

Contradictory data

While official research lists 327 identified names, alternative historical assessments point to approximately 350 victims of the tragedy. Discrepancies also remain regarding the precise attribution of certain unmarked graves before comprehensive anthropological and DNA testing is completed.

Prospects for exhumation and commemoration

This is the second Ukrainian search expedition on Polish territory after a long break, following work in the village of Yurechkovo in autumn 2025. The next stage should be the exhumation, reburial of the victims, and honoring their memory within the framework of the Ukrainian-Polish working group.
