On Saturday evening, October 17, 2026, Romanian F-16 fighter jets shot down two jet-powered attack drones that violated the country's airspace over the Black Sea. This was reported by the Ministry of National Defense of Romania. According to the agency, radars detected a group of aerial targets approximately 120 kilometers east of Zmiinyi (Snake) Island, moving in a southwesterly direction. To intercept them, two F-16 fighters on combat duty as part of the air police mission scrambled from the 86th Borcea Air Base, taking off at 17:43.
Chronology of Interception and Target Destruction
The Romanian Ministry of Defense identified the downed targets as Geran-type attack drones with jet engines. The first drone crossed Romanian airspace at 17:59 and was destroyed at 18:01 approximately 25 kilometers southeast of the city of Sulina, spending about two minutes in national airspace. The second UAV invaded airspace at 18:01 and was hit by another fighter at 18:05 in an area approximately 20 kilometers east of Sulina, remaining in Romania's airspace for about five minutes.
Series of Incidents Amid Black Sea Escalation
The Romanian military department emphasized that in the week leading up to Saturday's incident, radars recorded aerial targets moving in Ukraine's airspace near the Romanian border eight times. In four cases, drones briefly penetrated Romanian airspace. Additionally, over the same period, several merchant vessels were targeted by drones in the Black Sea, with some of the attacks occurring in Romania's territorial waters.
Emergency Meeting of the North Atlantic Council
In connection with the incident, Bucharest initiated a special meeting of the NATO North Atlantic Council, which is reportedly scheduled for Tuesday, October 20. The main items on the agenda will be defense and deterrence issues in the Black Sea region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania stated that Black Sea security is of key importance for international grain and energy supplies. NATO allies and European Union partners have already been informed of the incident.
Previous Incidents: Tankers and Falling Object
A reminder of the growing threat in the region came on October 15, when two chemical tankers caught fire in Romania's territorial waters following drone attacks. According to Romanian authorities, seven crew members on the San Marino-flagged vessel Wine Trader went missing, while another five were rescued. Even earlier, on October 2, an object resembling a drone fell on Romanian territory near the village of Plauru in Tulcea County, causing a fire after impact. The combination of these episodes forms a picture of systematic pressure on the country's airspace and maritime space, which prompted Bucharest to appeal to allies at the NATO level.
