Romanian airspace has become the scene of an incident that led to the use of live ammunition. Today, around 11:00, a Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle that violated the country's borders. The event was confirmed by Romanian President Nicolae Ciucă, while details of the incident were disseminated by local media and government agencies.
Firing in an Unpopulated Area
According to the head of state, the decision to open fire was made under conditions that ruled out any threat to the civilian population. The area where the interception took place was uninhabited, allowing the pilot to act without risking lives on the ground. Currently, special teams are working at the scene: they are surveying the area, collecting debris, and establishing the circumstances of the incident to identify those responsible for the incursion.
RO-ALERT System and Alarm in the Southeast
The incident with the drone prompted the activation of the national emergency alert system — RO-ALERT. A warning about the possible presence of a drone was issued in the Buzău county. According to the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU), the alarm signal was initiated by the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) at the national level.
The area covered by the warning includes a vast territory in southeastern Romania. In addition to Buzău county, similar messages were sent to residents of Brăila, Galați, and Tulcea counties. This indicates the seriousness of the situation and the authorities' readiness for large-scale threats to air security.
Context: Threat of Provocations Against NATO
This incident occurs against a backdrop of growing concerns regarding possible provocations against NATO member states. Experts and analysts point to the risk of Russia using "false flag" tactics — organizing attacks under a false flag with the aim of destabilizing the situation and weakening support for Ukraine.
Among the possible scenarios is the use of drones disguised as Ukrainian ones to strike Baltic countries or provoke Poland. In this context, the drone shot down in Romania could become part of a broader strategy of pressure on the alliance, although final conclusions regarding the origin of the aircraft will be drawn after the investigation is completed.
