The armed forces of the Russian Federation have carried out another targeted attack on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, striking a commercial cargo ship flying the Liberian flag. The incident occurred in one of the sea ports located in the Odesa region. As a result of the hostile strike, a sailor-motorist of the vessel was killed, and at least three other crew members sustained injuries of varying severity and were hospitalized. The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority officially confirmed the attack, emphasizing that the aggressor continues to systematically terrorize the peaceful merchant fleet in the Black Sea waters.
Systematic Terror Against Civilian Shipping
This attack is far from an isolated incident of targeted destruction of maritime logistics by Russia. Experts and official agencies note a frightening trend of escalating violence against international vessels ensuring the operation of Ukrainian grain and export corridors. Previously, on September 23, a vessel flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda was attacked in the Black Sea, resulting in the death of its captain. A similar tragic incident occurred on September 17 when a Russian drone strike hit a dry cargo ship under the Tanzanian flag, also resulting in a fatality and injured crew members.
Threat to Global Food Security
The aggressive actions of Russian troops in the Black Sea region pose a direct threat to global food stability. According to official data presented by the Ukrainian delegation at the OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation, over the course of the full-scale war, Moscow has destroyed 1,054 objects of Ukrainian port infrastructure and attacked 232 civilian vessels. The international community qualifies these actions as a gross violation of international maritime law and calls for a decisive response to these pirate methods of warfare.
