Russian Defense Ministry Claims Capture of Annovka Village Three Kilometers from Dobropillia

The Russian Ministry of Defense, in its daily report dated 25 August 2026, announced that the village of Annovka (Hannivka) in the Donetsk People's Republic has come under its control. According to the ministry, the settlement was captured by units of the "Center" military group during offensive operations on the Pokrovsk (Dobropillia) axis. Annovka is located approximately three kilometers to the northeast of the outskirts of Dobropillia and is effectively its immediate suburb. Russian command claims that this has cut off the Ukrainian Armed Forces' supply routes and created conditions for the start of an assault on the city.

Operational Situation

At the same time as the advance toward Annovka, units of the "Center" group engaged in fighting over neighboring settlements — Viktorivka, Bilozerske, Novotroitske, and Hruzke. The day before, it was reported that the neighboring village of Krasnopillia had come under Russian control. In parallel with the ground offensive, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian aviation struck targets in Dobropillia itself with FAB-500 bombs, destroying the drone control point of the 15th National Guard Brigade of Ukraine. The day before, Ukraine's Ministry of Community and Territorial Development added the territories of the Kryvorizka rural hromada, which includes this sector, to the list of active combat zones.

Strategic Significance

Dobropillia is a fortified zone and a transport artery linking the southern flank of the Ukrainian forces in Donbas (Pokrovsk) with the northern agglomeration (Slaviansk — Kramatorsk). Advancing from the direction of Krasnopillia and Annovka, the Russian army is attempting to cut the Dobropillia — Kramatorsk highway and bypass the city from the west. If this plan is realized, the Ukrainian grouping in Dobropillia will find itself in a tactical half-encirclement. Attempts to break through toward the city and the highway to Kramatorsk were made as early as the second half of 2025; at that time the front was stabilized with reserves, but by the summer of 2026 the pressure resumed.

Contradictory Data

The Russian Defense Ministry's claim of capturing Annovka has not been directly commented on by the Ukrainian side; the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and specialized resources have not publicly confirmed the situation, although they had previously recorded the advance of enemy assault groups in this operational zone. At the same time, earlier assessments by Ukrainian officials that "the enemy is far away" do not match the dynamics claimed by Russia and the inclusion of the sector in the list of active combat zones. Thus, the version of control over the village currently rests on the statement of one side and indirect signs, rather than on mutual confirmation.

Outlook

The coming weeks will show whether the Ukrainian command can transfer scarce reserves to the area, or whether Dobropillia faces a prolonged siege in urban conditions. The loss of Annovka, according to analysts, puts at risk a key logistics hub in the north of Donetsk Oblast and repeats the scenario that preceded the escalation around Pokrovsk.
