The events of the night of July 24 brought an alarming signal for NATO alliance countries. A Russian unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with control channels crossed the state border and ended up over Romanian territory. This is not just a random incident, but a potentially planned provocation aimed at destabilizing the situation in the region.
New tactics and challenges for air defense
Yuriy Ignat, Head of the Communications Department of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, commented on the large-scale attack that took place on the night of July 24. According to him, the enemy has significantly changed the tactics of using unmanned aerial vehicles. If previously classic models with internal combustion engines and "Parodia" type drones prevailed, now there is a sharp increase in the share of jet UAVs.
Ignat noted that jet drones can account for 20 to 30% of the total number of attacking devices. This creates a serious problem for air defense systems, as intercepting them requires either fighter jets or anti-aircraft missile systems capable of working with high-speed targets.
The danger of drones with live control
Particular concern is caused by the introduction of strike drones with real-time control channels. This means that the operator can instantly change the course and target of the attack, reacting to the actions of the defenders. Such devices pose an increased threat not only to static objects, but also to mobile targets - locomotives, cars and other equipment.
It was such a drone, equipped with mesh nets, that was recorded when crossing the border in the Vilko area. It penetrated the airspace of Romania, which led to the immediate take-off of fighter jets. The President of the country has already confirmed the fact of its destruction.
The question of intent
Yuriy Ignat directly raised the question of the intention of the Russian side. If the drone really had control channels, then its flight towards a NATO country may indicate a conscious provocation. The goal could be to create a pretext for escalation or to test the alliance's reaction to border violations.
This incident became the first recorded case of shooting down a Russian drone over Romanian territory. It highlights that the conflict in Ukraine is going beyond national borders and affects the interests of the entire European community.
Context of escalation
Earlier it was reported that Russia is increasingly using "Bandol" type ammunition when striking Ukrainian objects. At the same time, one of the NATO countries began to reform its army, relying on the experience of the war in Ukraine. These facts indicate that the conflict continues to influence the military strategy and politics of European states.
