Significant personnel changes have occurred at the US diplomatic mission in Kyiv. Career diplomat Sandra Audkirk has become the new Chargé d'Affaires a.i., replacing Julie Davis, who has concluded her tenure in the country. Official confirmation of the leadership change came from the US Embassy in Ukraine itself.

Professional background of the new head of mission

Sandra Audkirk is a senior member of the US Foreign Service with an impressive track record. She has over 30 years of international experience covering a wide range of issues: from strategic state competition to energy security and the imposition of economic sanctions.

Immediately prior to her appointment in Kyiv, starting in 2024, Audkirk worked at the US Department of Defense. There she held key positions, including Deputy Director of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies and Advisor for Foreign Affairs to US European Command.

Her career also includes leading major institutions. From 2021 to 2024, she headed the American Institute in Taiwan. In Washington, the diplomat specialized in countering the financing of threats and global security issues.

Geography and language skills

Audkirk's work experience is not limited to Europe and America. She has significant overseas experience, particularly in Taipei, Dublin, Ankara, Istanbul, and Beijing. This confirms her competence in working with complex geopolitical regions.

The diplomat speaks Chinese (Mandarin) and Turkish, which is a rare and valuable skill for a representative of the foreign affairs department. She received her education at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service.

Departure of the predecessor and context of the change

The change in leadership at the embassy occurred against the backdrop of Julie Davis's departure. The authority of the previous Chargé d'Affaires a.i. is ending amidst disagreements with the political course of US President Donald Trump. Notably, this is the second head of the US diplomatic mission in Ukraine to leave office due to Trump's position.

Before her departure, Julie Davis met with Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha. During the conversation, the sides discussed the current security situation and the efforts necessary to achieve a sustainable peace. The Foreign Minister thanked the diplomat for developing dialogue between the countries, and Davis officially finalized her diplomatic mission in Ukraine.
