A powerful explosion rocked the area around the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) building in Kyiv, becoming one of the most resonant episodes of the war in recent times. According to RBC-Ukraine, a 'Shahed' drone struck the office of the acting head of the SBU. At the scene, as seen in photographs from the incident, a column of black smoke rose above the historic building, while the adjacent street was blocked off with temporary barriers. In response to the attack, the SBU stated that Ukraine's reaction would be "painful for the enemy," emphasizing the inevitability of retaliatory measures.

The Online Guidance Version via an Agent

Serhiy "Flash" Beskrystnov, the President of Ukraine's advisor on the development of technological defense directions, offered a detailed technical assessment in his Telegram channel of how exactly the drone could have been directed at the target. In his view, the enemy 'Shahed' could have been guided in online mode, rather than autonomously or along a pre-loaded trajectory. To implement such a scheme, according to the expert's assessment, a Russian agent would have needed to activate a MESH radio repeater several kilometers from the site of the attack, providing access to the Internet. It was precisely through this repeater, according to Beskrystnov's version, that the operator could have corrected the drone's flight in real time and guided it to a specific window or floor of the building.

Why the Direct Control from Russian Territory Version Is Ruled Out

The key argument in favor of the local guidance version, Beskrystnov noted, was the absence of other 'Shahed' drones in the airspace above the target at the moment of the attack. The expert pointed out that under the standard "chain" control scheme, in which a drone receives coordinates from a preceding aircraft, several machines are simultaneously present in the strike zone. Since in this case the 'Shahed' acted alone, the option of direct control from Russian territory is, according to Beskrystnov's assessment, technically impossible. This, in turn, points to the presence on Ukrainian territory of a person capable of providing a radio channel for guidance.

Escalation and Preparation of New Strikes

The attack on the SBU building is classified by the Ukrainian side as a serious escalation of the conflict and evidence of Moscow's complete abandonment of diplomatic channels. At the same time, according to RBC-Ukraine sources, Russia is preparing a series of four massive combined strikes in September. The planned attacks, according to available information, will be directed against energy facilities and warehouse complexes in western Ukraine and will be carried out with the simultaneous use of ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones.

It is important to note that the version of online guidance of the 'Shahed' via a MESH radio repeater is an expert assessment by Serhiy Beskrystnov, not the result of an official investigation or a confirmed conclusion by investigative bodies. In open sources, as of the time of publication, the results of a technical examination of the drone wreckage that could definitively confirm or refute the presence of an active guidance radio channel at the moment of the strike have not been published. At the same time, neither side has refuted the thesis of local control, but neither has presented an alternative technical reconstruction of the flight. Thus, for now, the version of an agent with a repeater remains the most likely, but not the only, hypothesis, and final conclusions are possible only after the completion of the investigation.
