The security situation for the civilian population in Ukraine during the first half of 2026 has undergone dramatic changes. According to fresh data from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the number of killed and injured civilians has increased by more than a third compared to the same period last year.
Alarming statistics: the numbers speak for themselves
Over the six months of 2026, from January to June, 1,396 civilians were killed in Ukraine. Another 7,978 people sustained injuries of varying severity. These figures demonstrate a catastrophic rise: they are 37% higher than in the first half of 2025 and almost double the statistics for the same period in 2024.
This trend indicates that the threat to human life not only persists but has multiplied, encompassing new territories and spheres of life.
New reality: the threat of short-range drones
Particular concern is caused by the sharp increase in casualties from attacks by short-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This type of weapon alone caused the deaths of 418 people in the first six months of the current year. Another 2,437 civilians were injured as a result of strikes by such drones.
For comparison: during the same period in 2025, drones claimed the lives of 218 people, and 1,511 civilians were injured. This means that the effectiveness and frequency of the use of small drones by the adversary have increased manifold, making them one of the main sources of mortality among the civilian population.
UN expert opinion: causes of escalation
Danielle Bell, Head of the UN Mission to monitor human rights in Ukraine, speaking at a briefing in Kyiv, identified two key factors that provoked the current escalation of violence.
"This escalation is driven by two main reasons. The first is the use of long-range ballistic missiles and heavy drones. The second is the mass use of short-range drones and glide bombs in areas adjacent to the front line," Bell stated.
According to the UN representative, the consequences of these attacks go far beyond immediate human casualties. They deliver a systemic blow to infrastructure and the social fabric.
"These attacks are gradually destroying the systems that sustain the civilian population and allow communities to function," she emphasized, pointing out that cities are losing the ability to operate normally under constant pressure.
Enemy tactics: constant pressure on air defense
The situation on the front lines is confirmed by statements from Ukrainian military officials. Earlier, Yuriy Ignat, spokesperson for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, noted that the adversary has not reduced the use of drones but has radically changed their tactics of application.
According to information from Ignat, the occupiers have begun to combine drone attacks with strikes by ballistic missiles. Furthermore, drones are now being used not only at night but also during the day. Such a strategy creates a constant, exhausting load on Ukraine's air defense systems, leaving them no respite and increasing the likelihood of breakthrough strikes on civilian objects.
