Ukraine has made a massive leap in securing its logistical arteries. Since the beginning of 2026, the State Transport Special Service has equipped more than 1,184 kilometers of key routes with special anti-drone nets. These giant structures, resembling tunnels, are designed to protect convoys of ammunition and equipment from enemy drone strikes.
Accelerated work in the frontline zone
The pace of construction of defensive structures increased sharply during the summer period. According to the Ministry of Defense press service, only in July, 215 km of new defensive structures were built in frontline regions. Simultaneously, work was carried out to restore previously damaged sections: 16.52 km of protection were restored and almost 112.7 km of roads were repaired.
The scale of work covers several regions. Since the resumption of the active phase of construction in April of this year, current repairs and operational maintenance have been carried out on more than 424.9 km of roads. At the moment, work continues on 21 sections, and another 25 objects have already been fully completed and put into operation.
Defense strategy: from Volyn to Kharkiv
The deployment of nets is taking place selectively, depending on the threat. It was previously reported that the installation of structures began in border communities of the Volyn region, in particular in the Shatsk community. There, nets appeared along certain sections of roads to minimize risks when moving cargo near the border.
Particular attention is paid to the Kharkiv region. After a series of Russian attacks, regional authorities took new protective measures, some of which are already visible on the approaches to the regional center. Currently, anti-drone nets are being actively installed in the outskirts of Kharkiv, as these sections are considered the most vulnerable to enemy drone attacks.
The Kharkiv Regional Military Administration (RMA) does not rule out that protective structures may appear in other districts of the city in the future if the dangerous situation requires it. A flexible approach allows for an operational response to changes in the enemy's tactics.
The price of security
The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that these engineering solutions are of critical importance for conducting military operations. "Every protected kilometer of road is saved lives of Ukrainian soldiers, preserved equipment, and additional opportunities for our units to carry out combat missions," the department noted.
Visually, these structures represent long tunnels of black netting stretched over high metal supports. They create a physical barrier that intercepts drones, preventing them from reaching their target. For civilian transport and military vehicles, driving under such nets has become a new reality on many strategically important directions.
