Sony has officially announced that it will not release Android 17 for the Xperia 10 VI smartphone, despite promising users three major operating system updates at launch. In a statement, the manufacturer attributed the decision to limitations related to the internal storage configuration and apologized to users for changing its original plans. As a result, Android 16 remains the final major system version for this model rather than the promised Android 17.

What Was Promised and What Changed

The Xperia 10 VI was introduced in 2024 and launched running Android 14. Based on this, the update roadmap implied a sequential progression of versions: Android 15, then Android 16, and finally Android 17 as the third and final major update. The smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Now, according to Sony's decision, the chain of major updates cuts off at Android 16, and users will not receive any subsequent major OS versions.

«Technical Reasons» and the Storage Question

Sony's statement notes that after a detailed technical assessment, the company deemed it impossible to ensure acceptable performance of Android 17 on the Xperia 10 VI due to storage configuration limitations. However, the manufacturer did not disclose the specific reason: the wording of the statement does not explicitly conclude that the problem lies strictly in storage capacity. It refers to the broader concept of «storage configuration,» leaving room for various technical interpretations by experts and users.

Apologies and Commitment Status

«We understand that this is not in line with our initial announcement and apologize for the change in plans,» Sony stated. The company emphasized that the limitation is tied to the technical specifics of this specific model and does not affect other smartphones in the Xperia lineup. Commitments to releasing security updates remain fully intact: the Xperia 10 VI will receive them for four years from its release, meaning until May 2028.

What This Means for Owners

For Xperia 10 VI owners, the decision means the device will continue to receive security patches but will not get any new major Android versions with new features and interface improvements. Effectively, the smartphone will remain «stuck» on Android 16 as its final stable system version. For Sony, this is a precedent that could impact buyer trust in support timeline promises, as it is the first time the company has publicly deviated from its launch update roadmap, citing internal technical limitations of a specific device configuration.
