Kyiv, August 13, 2026 — The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has officially codified and approved for operational use by the Defense Forces a new domestic armored personnel carrier, the «Sova-BTR» (OWL-APC). Developed based on the technologies of the legendary «Sova» armored vehicle, this machine represents a qualitative leap in the tactical and technical equipment of the Ukrainian army, combining record-breaking mine protection with innovative digital control systems.
Revolution in protection: monocoque and V-shaped hull
The main engineering achievement of the new vehicle is its hull construction. The «Sova-BTR» is built on a monocoque scheme — a rigid, fully welded body that distributes the load from explosions across the entire surface area rather than at specific points. Combined with a V-shaped hull, a double floor, and inertial blast-absorbing units, this architecture provides the crew and troops with the highest level of mine protection in its class.
To ensure the safety of personnel, shock-absorbing blast-resistant seats are provided. The troop compartment is designed modularly: within a few hours, the standard interior can be converted into a full-fledged medical block (medevac), which is critical for evacuating the wounded from the front lines.
Virtual reality on the battlefield
One of the most discussed features of the «Sova-BTR» is its proprietary 360-degree VR panoramic viewing system. In the conditions of modern warfare, where the use of thermal imagers and drones makes traditional observation from hatches lethally dangerous, this technology changes the rules of the game.
The driver wears special virtual reality glasses that transmit images from external cameras equipped with night vision modules. This allows the vehicle to be driven while remaining completely inside the armored capsule without looking outside, minimizing the risk of the crew being hit by cluster munitions or sniper fire.
Tactical mobility and versatility
Unlike heavy tracked analogues, the «Sova-BTR» is based on a 4x4 wheeled formula, which ensures high mobility, lower weight, and reduced visibility on the battlefield. The vehicle boasts a large range and high maximum speed, allowing for the rapid redeployment of units to necessary sections of the front.
The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that the new equipment is designed for a wide range of tasks: from fire support and patrolling to the liquidation of consequences of technological disasters. The operational costs of the «Sova-BTR» are significantly lower than those of foreign analogues, and maintenance is simplified due to the availability of components.

Furthermore, the exact number of vehicles produced at this time is not disclosed, creating uncertainty regarding the real impact of the new equipment on the overall combat readiness of brigades in the near future.
