On Friday, a major resonance erupted in Belgium concerning national security and the activities of the North Atlantic Alliance. Local police arrested a Canadian citizen of Chinese origin who was interning at NATO's Strategic Command. The woman is suspected of spying for a third country, as well as participating in a criminal organization.
Searches and Arrest
According to official data from the Federal Prosecutor's Office of Belgium, intelligence agencies had taken notice of the intern during her employment. She was employed at the Headquarters of the Allied Command Operations (SHAPE), located in the city of Mons. This unit plays a key role in the strategic planning of the Alliance.
Operational actions began on Thursday. Law enforcement officers conducted extensive searches both at the suspect's private residence and in her office. Following the investigation, the investigating judge issued an arrest warrant, which was executed on Friday.
NATO Headquarters Response
Belgian authorities are currently refraining from publishing the name of the arrested woman and have not specified which "third country" she allegedly acted in the interest of. However, the leadership of the SHAPE headquarters has already issued a statement intended to reassure the public and Alliance partners.
SHAPE spokesperson Martina O'Donnell stated that the suspect's activities did not cause harm to the organization. According to her, there are currently no signs that NATO's operational readiness, command mechanisms, or tasks being carried out have been compromised.

As noted by Bloomberg, the NATO headquarters is located in Brussels, while the SHAPE strategic command is situated approximately 60 kilometers southwest of the Belgian capital.
