Absolute Orbital Leadership

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced on the social network X that the Starlink communications satellite constellation has reached the milestone of 11,000 spacecraft in orbit. According to him, no satellite provider in the world has come even close to this figure. Musk's statement is backed by data from the independent orbital object catalog KeepTrack: as of July 2026, Starlink accounts for more than half of the 19,447 payloads in Earth orbit. This is more than five times the combined total of the next ten largest constellations, making the gap over the nearest competitors unprecedented.

Scale of Deployment

The program's momentum is impressive: since May 2019, SpaceX has launched 12,444 Starlink satellites into orbit, of which about 1,660 have already deorbited and burned up in the atmosphere. In effect, the company has deorbited more spacecraft than the second-ranked OneWeb constellation has launched over its entire existence. Deployment rates remain high — two or three Starlink missions are sent to orbit every week, allowing the company not only to grow its fleet but also to replace end-of-life spacecraft.

Competitors Fall Behind

According to KeepTrack data for July 2026, in the ranking of the five largest constellations in low Earth orbit, Starlink firmly holds first place, while Amazon Leo ranks only third. The gap between the leader and the rest of the players is so large that the combined fleet of the top ten competitors is smaller than SpaceX's network alone. This means that Starlink has effectively monopolized the segment of broadband satellite internet in low Earth orbit.

Amazon Leo: Missed Deadlines

Musk's main competitor, the Amazon Leo program, is facing difficulties. The first-generation constellation is to consist of 3,236 satellites, and the company holds authorization to deploy an additional 4,500 spacecraft. However, Amazon failed to meet the established deadline: by July 2026, the company was required to deploy 1,600 spacecraft, but it fell short and requested an extension of the deadline to 2028. Nevertheless, according to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy during the quarterly earnings report, the already-deployed constellation of nearly 400 satellites is sufficient to begin providing basic services to subscribers.

Subscriber Base and Outlook

Against the backdrop of its technological lead over competitors, Starlink continues to grow its commercial metrics as well: the service's customer base has surpassed 12 million subscribers. The combination of the world's largest satellite fleet, weekly deployment of new missions, and a multi-million-strong subscriber base cements SpaceX's status as the undisputed leader of the satellite internet market. For competitors, including Amazon, the key task in the coming years will be not only to accelerate deployment but also to overcome the multiple-fold lag in the number of spacecraft launched into orbit.
