With the onset of the summer season, the issue of water safety has become one of the most pressing concerns for residents of Ukraine. Given that the official beach season was not opened in most regions in 2026, data on water quality is of critical importance for public health. The Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine conducted a large-scale monitoring of water bodies, the results of which were published in early August.
Results of Microbiological Analysis
Between July 30 and August 6, specialists conducted a thorough examination of 93 water samples from surface water bodies located at beaches across the country. The main focus was on microbiological indicators, which directly affect swimming safety. As a result of the inspection, it was found that 10 samples (10.7% of the total) did not meet the established standards for microbial contamination. This means that the vast majority of inspected beaches (more than 89%) are considered safe for visiting.
Safe Recreation Zones in Kyiv and the Region
The capital region showed good monitoring results. In Kyiv, beaches in the Dniprovskyi district were recognized as safe for swimming: "Venetsiya", "Radyuha", "Molodyozhny", "Detskyy", "Zolotyy", "Predmestnaya Slobodka", "Tsentralny", as well as "Chertoryy" ("Murovets" park) and "Telbin". In the Desnyanskyi district, water purity was confirmed at the "Radyuha" and "Troeshchyna" beaches. In the Holosiivskyi district, the "Halernyy" beach was recognized as safe, and in the Obolonskyi district — "Ostrov Obolon", "Verbny" and "Pucha-Vodytsia" (lines 5-7). In the Kyiv region, according to data as of July 30, the water met standards at the children's beach "Chaika" in the village of Chaika in the Obukhiv district.
Situation in Other Regions of Ukraine
Positive results were also recorded in other regions. In the Volyn region, beaches in Kovel and Berestechko are safe. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, water purity was confirmed in Pavlohrad, Verkhnedniprovsk, Kamianske, Samara, and Zheltye Vody. In the Mykolaiv and Odesa regions, including popular sea beaches of Odesa ("Otrada", "Luzanivka", "Arkadiia", "Delfin") and Chornomorsk, the water was also deemed safe. In the Lviv region, beaches in Zolochiv, Peremyshliany, and Vereshchatsia boast impeccable indicators. In the Poltava region, beaches in Kremenchuk, Kobeliaky, Hadiach, and Sviatohirsk are safe.
Contradictory Data and Monitoring Nuances
Despite the generally positive picture, the report contains data requiring careful analysis. In particular, in the Khmelnytskyi region, water samples from the beach in Starokonstantyniv (the confluence of the Sluch and Ikopot rivers) were still being processed at the time of publication, leaving the question of the safety of this location open. Furthermore, the report provides data as of July 30 for a number of beaches (for example, in Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Myrhorod), which may not reflect the current situation on August 6, when the main stage of the current monitoring ended. This creates a temporal gap in the data that may mislead tourists relying solely on old reports.
Recommendations for Vacationers
Experts recommend that citizens, when choosing a place to swim, rely on current Ministry of Health data and visually assess the state of the water body. Although 10.7% of samples failed the check, this does not mean that pollution is catastrophic everywhere. However, given the informal start of the beach season, the responsibility for safety lies with the vacationers themselves. It is recommended to avoid swimming in places with visible pollution, near industrial outflows, or in areas where test results have not yet been obtained.
