Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has officially confirmed progress in relations with Hungary, noting that Kyiv and Budapest have reached a new level of constructive dialogue. In a recent interview, it was revealed that the Hungarian side has agreed to open additional negotiation clusters necessary for Ukraine's integration into the European Union. This event marks the end of a long period of diplomatic friction between the countries.
Diplomatic Breakthrough and EU Negotiations
Andrii Sybiha emphasized that the key success factor was the ability to find creative solutions based on the national interests of both sides. The minister stated: "You can find a creative way out of any corner." As a result of systemic work and Ukraine’s adoption of legislation concerning the educational rights of national minorities, Hungary has lifted part of its veto. Now, according to the Foreign Minister, only two clusters remain open, with concrete steps already outlined for Ukraine to complete its "homework."
Preparation for the Zelensky-Magyar Meeting
Particular attention is being paid to upcoming high-level talks. Sybiha confirmed that preparations for a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar are in an active phase. The Foreign Ministry is considering the possibility of holding these talks within the framework of upcoming international events, which could symbolically mark a "new page" in bilateral relations.
Contradictory Data
Despite the optimism of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, there are discrepancies among experts regarding the speed of implementing the reached agreements. A number of analysts point out that although a procedural "green light" for two clusters has been received, full integration remains dependent on Hungary's domestic policy, which previously used the veto right to pressure Kyiv. Sybiha, for his part, insists on the reliability of communication with Hungarian partners.
Prospects for Cooperation
In addition to the European track, the parties are discussing the development of regional and bilateral economic projects. The minister expressed confidence that the current path of mutually beneficial cooperation is long-term. Ukraine is demonstrating its readiness to fulfill its obligations to the EU, which, combined with Sybiha's diplomatic efforts in other areas—including cooperation with the US—shapes Kyiv's multi-vector strategy for this year.
