A modernized main battle tank, the T-80BVM, was spotted on railway tracks in Russia, being transported on a specialized flatcar train. Photos that appeared on social media and were analyzed by The Defence Blog show the combat vehicle with clear signs of deep modernization aimed at countering modern threats.

The main distinguishing feature of the spotted tank is the installation of a special anti-drone structure on the turret. Military personnel jokingly refer to these mesh or lattice screens as 'mangals' (barbecues). Their purpose is to detonate the warheads of FPV drones and loitering munitions at a safe distance, preventing them from penetrating the upper armor of the hull.

In addition to drone protection, the tank has received an updated set of explosive reactive armor (ERA). Blocks installed along the side skirts and around the perimeter of the turret detonate outwards upon impact, destroying the enemy's cumulative jet before it contacts the main armor.

The T-80BVM is a deep modernization of the Soviet T-80BV tank, first shown to the public at the 'Zapad' exercises in 2017. The key advantage of this machine remains its gas turbine engine, which provides high mobility and dynamics unattainable by diesel counterparts, such as the T-72.
