On Sunday, July 19, a significant portion of Ukraine was covered by severe weather. The storm showed particular ferocity in the western regions: Ternopil and Khmelnytskyi were flooded by downpours, while in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, hail reached the size of chicken eggs. The consequences of weather anomalies were also recorded in the Vinnytsia region.

Ternopil: Streets Turned into Rivers

Around 19:00, local Telegram channels began to report en masse about a critical situation in Ternopil. According to eyewitnesses, heavy rain caused the city to literally "go underwater." The situation on the streets became dangerous for pedestrians: the strong flow of water in some places was so powerful that it knocked people off their feet. In one of the districts, the storm knocked down a fence, demonstrating the power of the flood.

Rescuers and utility services were mobilized to eliminate the consequences of the emergency. Main efforts were directed at pumping water out of flooded areas on Hayova Bichna, Mykulinetska, Stadnikova, Konovaltsa, and Obolonia streets.

Khmelnytskyi: Water up to the Fourth Floor

The situation was critical in Khmelnytskyi as well. Water broke into the construction and household hypermarket "Epitsentr," where streams flowed directly across the floor. Authors of the local Telegram channel "Khmelnytskyi LIVE" clarified that the water level in some zones reached the mark of the fourth floor.

Hail and Manhole Covers: Consequences in Other Regions

The bad weather did not spare the Ivano-Frankivsk region either. Large hail fell in the village of Zhuraky of the Bohorodchany settlement hromada. A similar situation occurred in the Vinnytsia region, where hail was recorded in the village of Voytovtsi of the Khmelnytskyi district.

In Vinnytsia itself, the downpour caused unpredictable effects: during the rain, one of the manhole covers "jumped," indicating a high level of groundwater and pressure in the system. Also, the football field of the "Naberezhny Kvartal" residential complex turned into a real swimming pool.

Forecast for July 20

Specialists from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center (UkrGMZ) warn that dangerous phenomena will persist throughout the current day — July 20. The forecast predicts:

  • Thunderstorms across the entire territory of Ukraine, except for the east, southeast, and most western regions.
  • Hail and gusts with speeds of 15–20 m/s in separate areas of the northern, central, Odesa, and Mykolaiv regions.

Meteorologists note that such weather conditions may lead to a worsening of the situation on roads and in settlements. Experts remind us that July in Ukraine can be unpredictable, and the accuracy of forecasts depends on the work of meteorological services and a complex measurement system.
