On October 4, Ukraine celebrates Territorial Defense Forces Day. Over the past few years, the TDF has travelled an unprecedented path from a newly established branch of the military to combat units that today effectively fight on the most difficult frontline sectors and perform a wide range of strategic tasks to defend the state.
Background and Creation of the Modern Structure
Territorial defense in Ukraine existed long before the full-scale invasion. Back in 2014, specialized territorial defense battalions began forming within the Ground Forces. A crucial milestone was the adoption of the Law "On the Foundations of National Resistance" in 2021, which provided for the creation of a separate branch within the Armed Forces of Ukraine. By January 2022, plans included deploying 25 brigades and over 150 battalions designed for a staff strength of more than 130,000 service members during a special period.
From Civilian Professions to the Frontline
With the onset of full-scale aggression, the ranks of the TDF were massively replenished by citizens of peaceful professions—entrepreneurs, doctors, teachers, IT specialists, and engineers. In the first month alone, more than 110,000 volunteers joined the Territorial Defense Forces. TDF units stood up for the defense of Kyiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and other key cities from the very first days, and subsequently participated in strategic operations along the entire combat contact line.
Modern Development and New Challenges
Today, the TDF represents a highly organized structure that includes infantry, mechanized units, aerial reconnaissance, and mortar crews. In June 2026, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced a large-scale reinforcement of the unmanned component in TDF brigades and the formation of specialized UAV units in the northern direction. Amidst these transformations, the main symbols of the TDF remain unchanged—the crenellated wall, the trident, the bee, and the slogan "Ready for Resistance!"
