The central match of Round 7 of the Ukrainian Premier League between Luhansk's Zorya and Kyiv's Dynamo ended in a 2:0 win for the visitors. Both goals were scored in the final minutes of the second half — in the 83rd and 86th minutes — turning what seemed like an even, tight encounter into a sensational one in terms of drama. The match was played at the stadium in Luhansk (Zorya's home arena), and the nominal hosts fought to hold on to a draw until the very end.

First half: Kyiv's edge and Popara's strike on the frame

In the first 45 minutes, the initiative was largely in the hands of the Kyiv side: Dynamo controlled the ball more often and built positional attacks. However, the sharpest moment of the half belonged to Zorya. Midfielder Popara delivered a powerful shot that struck the crossbar and then the post of Bushan's goal, leaving the Kyiv goalkeeper without any work. This episode became the symbol of the first half: both teams had chances, but neither could turn their advantage into a goal. The teams went to the break with the score at 0:0.

Gerson Rodrigues' debut and the turning-point stretch

In the second half, Gerson Rodrigues took to the pitch — a former Dynamo player for whom this match was his debut in Zorya's colours. The Portuguese was given a chance to score in his first official match for his new club, but he was unable to convert it. Nevertheless, the advantage in the game still remained with the Kyiv side, who methodically rebuilt their attacks and searched for a gap in the opponent's defence. It was precisely this accumulated pressure that ultimately led to the breakthrough.

Three minutes that decided it all

In the 83rd minute, Brazhko opened the scoring: the Dynamo midfielder struck from distance, the ball changed trajectory after a deflection and flew into Saputin's net. Zorya's goalkeeper was powerless in this episode. And just three minutes later, in the 86th minute, Ponomarenko made it 2:0: the Dynamo forward probed in from the edge of the penalty area, and the ball flew into the net with no chance for the home goalkeeper. Thus, two goals scored within 90 seconds completely determined the outcome of the match.

Implications for the standings

Thanks to this win, Dynamo reclaimed fourth place in the UPL table. At the same time, the Kyiv side have a match in hand against Chornomorets, which allows the team to edge out Karpaty on points lost. Zorya, for their part, remained in eighth place. The situation for the Luhansk side is complicated by the fact that, in the event of an LNZ win in their match, the team risks falling several points further behind their pursuers. It is also worth noting that, even before this match, Kharkiv had edged out Bukovyna in the second half and briefly pushed Dynamo down to fifth place, but the win over Zorya immediately returned the Kyiv side to their previous position.

Reaction from the match's heroes

After the game, Dynamo forward Ponomarenko commented on the turning-point stretch of the match: "We talked in the dressing room, corrected our mistakes and squeezed Zorya out," the player noted, emphasising that the team was able to pull itself together at the break and convert its accumulated advantage. His words confirm that the second half was the result of a deliberate tactical adjustment, rather than a coincidence of circumstances.
