Just a few years ago, crossovers in the public mind were associated above all with the "SUV effect": a rugged look, enhanced off-road capability, and a willingness to forgive the owner any level of fuel consumption. However, the market has changed. Today, a buyer choosing a family crossover increasingly pays attention to the specific figures in the "fuel consumption" column and the real driving range on a single tank. RBC-Ukraine has prepared a review of the five most fuel-efficient crossovers available on the Ukrainian market in 2026, and we are presenting the key data from this article.
Ford Kuga: Three Design Versions and a Hybrid with a 2.5-Litre Naturally Aspirated Engine
One of the most typical crossovers of our time — the third-generation Ford Kuga — stands out for its spacious cabin, a sensible trunk, and the signature "Ford" character: a sharp steering wheel, an emotional driving experience, and relative affordability in terms of price. The model has plenty of its own unique features. First, the design: in different trims it differs not only in styling details — in fact, there are three design versions of a single model. Second, the lineup includes a large-by-today's-standards naturally aspirated petrol engine of 2.5 litres producing 180 hp, paired with a hybrid powertrain. The model is offered as a full hybrid FHEV, as a plug-in rechargeable version (2.5 L, 243 hp), and as a purely petrol version with a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 150–186 hp. The transmission is either manual or automatic, and the drive is either front-wheel or all-wheel. The trunk volume reaches 553 litres, fuel consumption starts from 5.2 L/100 km, and the starting price is from 1,190,000 UAH.
Sixth-Generation Toyota RAV4: Hybrid Only and Up to 126 km of Electric Range
A crossover classic and a sales leader in the segment in many countries, including Ukraine — the Toyota RAV4 in its sixth generation. A fundamental innovation: the model is now available only as a hybrid — either a full (conventional) hybrid or a plug-in rechargeable version with a claimed electric-only range of up to 126 km. In both cases, under the hood is a unified next-generation powertrain: a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (total output of 230–329 hp) paired with an electromechanical CVT. The drive is either front-wheel or all-wheel, and the transmission is exclusively automatic. The GR Sport version deserves a separate mention: a front fascia with a large air intake, a rear spoiler, a track width widened by 2 cm, 20-inch wheels, sporty suspension and handling tuning, as well as reinforcements in the rear part of the body. Despite its imposing look and Toyota's traditional focus on reliability, the RAV4 remains among the leaders in fuel efficiency: consumption from 4.3 to 4.7 L/100 km, trunk volume up to 446 litres, price from 1,836,000 UAH.
Nissan X-Trail: e-POWER, a Seven-Seat Cabin and a 0–100 km/h Sprint in 7 Seconds
Again a sales hit and again Japanese, but with a different charisma. The new-generation Nissan X-Trail on the Ukrainian market is sold with two types of powertrains, and all versions are petrol (1.5-litre turbo) and all are electrified. The first option is a mild hybrid MHEV, where an additional electric motor assists the petrol engine during acceleration and on climbs. The second modification is equipped with one or two electric motors, the battery of which is constantly charged from the petrol engine via a generator (the e-POWER scheme). In addition to fuel efficiency, this configuration delivers performance: 7.0–7.2 seconds to 100 km/h is an excellent result for a large family car. A large family can choose a 7-seat cabin layout. A distinctive feature of the model is the combination of emotional, sharp handling on the highway and comfortable traversal of potholes. Sixth-Generation Honda CR-V: Series Hybrid and Space for Rear Passengers
Large Honda crossovers have traditionally been created with the American market in mind, so the CR-V of the latest, sixth generation, is a car with a smooth ride and soft responses. In its place is the traditional for Honda complex and reliable technology and a spacious cabin, where above all the space for rear passengers is striking. The model exists only in hybrid form: either a plug-in rechargeable version with an electric range of up to 79 km, or a "conventional" hybrid operating on a series scheme — popular with Honda's engineers. At its core is a 2.0-litre petrol engine. The RBC-Ukraine review clearly demonstrates the 2026 trend: a family crossover no longer has to be "thirsty". Four of the five models reviewed (Kuga, RAV4, X-Trail, CR-V) are offered in hybrid or electrified versions, and fuel consumption starts from 4.3 L/100 km. At the same time, none of the models sacrifices trunk volume (from 446 to 575 litres) or practicality (seven-seat options, all-wheel drive, rich equipment levels). The price range — from 1,190,000 UAH for the Ford Kuga to 1,836,000 UAH for the Toyota RAV4 — allows you to find an option for any budget while maintaining the key requirement of the modern owner: maximum fuel efficiency without a loss of comfort and performance.
