Ukrainian defense forces struck an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea. According to diplomatic sources, the vessel was transporting a military cargo intended for Russia. This was stated by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Israel, Yevhen Korniychuk, confirming that the ship carried components for drones and missiles.
Legitimate target in wartime
The diplomat emphasized that attacking such vessels is an absolutely legitimate measure to protect national security. According to Korniychuk, Ukraine is fighting a single enemy representing different sides of one 'axis of evil'. He also noted that such operations may continue, as ships involved in the transfer of armaments remain priority military targets.
Earlier, on July 26, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy officially confirmed the successful results of long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea. The head of state reported that among the destroyed targets were vessels used to transport military cargo in cooperation with Iran.
Hidden logistics and sanctions evasion
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detailed information about the incident, stating that the attacked ship was operating in violation of international sanctions. Its task was to transport military cargo between Tehran and Moscow. Despite this, Iran continues to insist on the civilian status of the vessel.
In response to Tehran's accusations, the Ukrainian side refuted the version of transporting peaceful goods. "The ship contained components for drones and missiles destined for Russia," Korniychuk stated, noting that this is not the first attack on such targets.

The incident provoked a sharp reaction from Iran. Tehran accused Kyiv of attacking a civilian vessel and claimed that one person died. However, Ukrainian authorities insist on the military nature of the cargo and the legitimacy of the strike.
