Ukrainian servicemen continue to demonstrate an innovative approach to combat operations on the front lines. Fighters of the Alter Ego UGV unit, part of the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade, have developed a unique technology for the aerial deployment of unmanned ground vehicles using heavy bomber drones.

Innovative Tactics of Marsupial Systems

Such technological solutions, where one drone delivers another robot directly to the combat mission zone, are commonly referred to in global practice as marsupials. To date, mastering such complex deployment tactics is available to only a few units on the battlefield. Specialists of Alter Ego designed a specialized UGV called Desantnyk and created a specialized software and hardware solution for its accurate and safe air-drop. Notably, the entire cycle from the initial engineering idea to successful combat implementation took a record short time — just 10 days.

Combat Application and First Results

The developed system has already proven its high efficiency in real combat conditions. The Desantnyk UGV has confirmed strikes against enemy positions, including the destruction of fortifications and Russian occupation troops' personnel. The command of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade notes that a significant amount of time passed between the technology's creation, its first tests, and the moment of public disclosure, during which the robot successfully underwent rigorous frontline testing.

Contradictory Data

Open sources and expert reports show certain discrepancies in assessing the priority and scale of such operations. While the Brave1 press service and the 93rd Brigade emphasize the rapid development of the Desantnyk UGV by the Alter Ego battalion and their 10-day implementation cycle, other analytical materials (in particular, Forbes publications and reports on the actions of the 3rd Army Corps) report similar deep rear robot deployment operations within Operation Vivaldi. At the same time, estimates of the equipment deployment range vary from tactical near-rear positions to 10 kilometers deep into enemy territory, along with conflicting data on the units involved.

Development of Ukraine's Robotics Market

It is worth noting that unmanned ground systems remain one of the most dynamically developing areas of the domestic defense-industrial complex. In addition to unique developments by frontline brigades, the Ukrainian front is actively saturated with international and experimental platforms, such as the Croatian Komodo UGV from Rheinmetall, which in September successfully passed testing for engineering support and bridge-laying, demonstrating the complex synergy of robotics on the battlefield.
