Ukraine is facing a critical challenge for its economy: Russia has effectively blocked the maritime corridor by attacking civilian vessels. In response to this threat, Kyiv is intensifying diplomatic and logistical efforts to find alternative routes for exporting grain and other products.

Diplomatic Pressure on Moscow

The Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, confirmed in an interview with RBC-Ukraine that the country has already appealed to its allies for assistance. Kyiv's strategy involves increasing international pressure on Moscow to unblock maritime exports.

Sybiha emphasized that Russia's actions go beyond the scope of a local conflict. By attacking civilian vessels, Moscow is spreading terror far beyond the Black Sea. The tragedy is compounded by the fact that the crews of these ships are predominantly foreign nationals, becoming victims of shelling.

Activation of 'Solidarity Lanes'

Recognizing the scale of the threat to the economy, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ordered the immediate activation of the European Union's 'Solidarity Lanes' program. This decision aims to compensate for the loss of sea routes by developing land logistics.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs reported on active consultations with all neighboring states: Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland. During the negotiations, two key areas are being discussed:

  • Expanding existing infrastructure to increase capacity.
  • Creating conditions for the use of partner countries' ports for the transit of Ukrainian grain.

The mechanism of operation will resemble the experience of 2022, when land corridors became a lifeline for exports. The main goal is to ensure uninterrupted delivery of Ukrainian products to global markets, despite the blockade of its own ports.

Global Consequences for Food Security

Andrii Sybiha reminded of the global context of what is happening. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine led to a sharp spike in food prices: the global index rose by 25%. The blockade of Ukrainian grain exports exacerbates the food crisis, affecting countries around the world.

At the same time, the Administration of Sea Ports of Ukraine officially stated that the country has not introduced restrictions on the operation of the Ukrainian Maritime Corridor. However, as experts note, massive attacks on the ports of Odesa and other regions make the use of these routes extremely risky, forcing Kyiv to seek detours.
