The State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine has announced a large-scale project to enhance safety at the state border. As part of the initiative, 135 primary mobile shelters will be installed at 28 border checkpoints and adjacent access roads. These protective structures are designed to safeguard citizens and border service personnel from potential air attacks and shelling.
Project Geography and Installation Regions
Large-scale procurement and subsequent installation of the protective structures are being carried out by regional Restoration Services in five border regions of the country. Strategically important areas have been included, specifically Vinnytsia, Odesa, Chernivtsi, Zakarpattia, and Volyn regions. The selection of these locations is driven by the need to strengthen security measures along key logistics and transport arteries connecting Ukraine with the European Union and Moldova.
Security Context and Recent Incidents
The urgent need to construct protective structures at the border is highlighted by recent dangerous incidents. Previously, reports emerged regarding a shell hitting a regular bus near the «Palanca» checkpoint on the border with Moldova, injuring a border guard. Additionally, drone activity was recorded near the Ukrainian-Polish border, specifically around the «Ягодин» (Yahodyn) checkpoint, underscoring high risks for civilian infrastructure and passenger traffic.
Significance for Logistics and Infrastructure
According to the relevant agency, the installation of mobile shelters is a critically important component for ensuring the uninterrupted movement of people and vehicles. Despite constant security threats, border checkpoints continue to operate around the clock, maintaining economic ties and humanitarian corridors. The new shelters will minimize risks to the lives and health of hundreds of thousands of citizens crossing the state borders daily.
