The Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine has developed a legislative initiative granting war veterans and their family members the right to priority crossing of the state border. This new measure aims to create additional social benefits for combatants and individuals with disabilities resulting from the war, allowing them to pass through border control without waiting in the general line.

Bill Details and Travel Conditions

According to the Ministry of Veterans Affairs' plans for 2026–2027, the initiative involves amending Article 23 of the Law of Ukraine "On Border Control." Not only veterans themselves, but also family members traveling together in the same vehicle will be able to utilize this priority crossing right. A key condition is the legal status of the vehicle: it must be registered to and in the legal use of the veteran or their close relatives.

Veterans Community Position and Outlook

Head of the Veterans Council, Andriy Kozyura, emphasized that introducing such a rule is a significant gesture of respect toward citizens who participated in the country's defense. The bill's initiators hope that the document will be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for consideration in the near future. Supporters of the idea believe that establishing "green corridors" at the border is a logical step in implementing state policy for the social support of defenders.

Context of State Veteran Support

The discussion of new benefits comes against the backdrop of optimizing other government programs. Earlier, it was reported that payments for the "Veteran Sport" program were suspended in October due to the exhaustion of budget funds. Under this program, veterans could receive 1,500 hryvnias quarterly for gym memberships, swimming, and physical exercise. The lack of further funding for this initiative has sparked debates regarding the priority of budget resource allocation for supporting the veteran community.

Significance of the Initiative

Implementing the right to priority border crossing will be a significant factor in increasing the comfort of veterans when moving through checkpoints. The success of passing this bill will depend on the readiness of the parliament to support the proposed legislative changes. It is expected that the project's implementation will reduce the burden on veterans during long wait times at the border and ensure appropriate travel conditions for them.
