The issue of resuming Ukrainian natural gas exports has become a key theme of the energy agenda at the end of September 2026. According to expert estimates, the partial opening of foreign supplies will not affect tariffs for the population, which remain fixed until at least April 2027. Natural gas market analyst at ExPro Consulting Mykhailo Svyshcho emphasizes that household and commercial market segments operate independently, and the proposed export volumes do not threaten the safety of the heating season.
Regulation mechanism and storage reserves
As of today, Ukraine possesses significant energy reserves. Underground gas storage (UGS) facilities have accumulated about 15.5 billion cubic meters of gas, which exceeds the government's target of 14.6 billion cubic meters. The planned export mechanism involves a limit of up to 15% of total production, which is about 300 million cubic meters per month. Experts note that exporting 500-600 million cubic meters over a couple of months will in no way destabilize the current balance of the system.
Contradictory data
Despite the experts' confidence in the safety of supplies, there is an ongoing discussion in the information space regarding risks. Critics of the initiative point out that in the context of a full-scale war, any export operations carry potential threats. At the same time, supporters of the idea, including the Director of the Energy Research Center Oleksandr Kharchenko, insist that revenues from gas sales are necessary for mining companies to restore infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks.
Safety and protective mechanisms
To prevent critical situations, the government is developing a strict system of 'fuses.' The draft of the relevant decree provides for the possibility of immediately stopping exports in case of a deterioration in production or a sharp drop in gas reserves due to external attacks. This means that the country's energy security remains an absolute priority, and commercial activity will be fully dependent on the stability of the energy system.
