The Ukrainian Sea Corridor continues to function despite extremely complex security conditions in the Black Sea. Ports are receiving merchant vessels, ensuring critically important logistics for the country. This was reported by the Administration of Sea Ports of Ukraine (AMPU) in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.
Situation in the Black Sea: The Cost of Security
The situation in the waters remains tense due to systematic Russian attacks on civilian port infrastructure and merchant vessels. AMPU emphasizes that the security factor is currently determining shipowners' decisions regarding voyage execution. Many companies are forced to review logistics routes, fearing a recurrence of tragedies.
«This affects the decision of individual shipowners to enter Ukrainian ports», — the Administration clarified. However, it is important to note: Ukraine has not introduced any restrictions on the operation of the corridor. It continues to function, and ports continue to handle cargo.
Tragedies as a Warning
Events of recent weeks have served as a harsh reminder of the risks. On July 19, as a result of an attack on the vessel Golden Leo, departing from the port of Odesa, four Indians were killed. Another sailor is in the hospital in critical condition. The attack occurred at the moment the ship was leaving the port after loading.
Just the next day, on July 20, occupiers struck a merchant vessel under the flag of Guinea-Bissau. The ship was leaving a Ukrainian port after loading corn. Ten sailors were killed. These incidents not only claimed lives but also put the trust of international partners in the safety of the Ukrainian sea route at risk.
Countermeasures: Protection and Restoration
Key prerequisites for improving the situation are strengthening protection against Russian air attacks. State Enterprise «AMPU» reports uninterrupted port operations and the prompt restoration of damaged infrastructure. Together with the Ministry of Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Navy, and the country's Defense Forces, all necessary measures are being taken to maintain the functioning of the corridor.
Under constant threat, Ukrainian ports demonstrate resilience. Despite losses and pressure, they remain open for trade, which is an important signal to the global community: Ukraine does not surrender and continues to fulfill its obligations as a maritime logistics hub.
