«Ukrtelecom» has officially announced the launch of a new mobile brand, U Mobile, operating under the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) model. The company published a link to the new brand's website on social media and opened pre-orders for two products — «Symka» (SIM card) and «Optics+Symka». On the website, users can already leave their phone number and submit an application. According to data from the MZU — «Mobile Communications of Ukraine» telecommunications community, which was reported to be preparing for the launch just before the official announcement, mobile services are planned to be combined with GPON optical internet into unified comprehensive plans for individual subscribers.
What U Mobile offers: products and plans
The U Mobile website features two main products. The first is «Symka», a standalone mobile service. The second is «Optics+Symka», which combines fixed optical internet and mobile connectivity in a single package. According to preliminary MZU information, the «Severka» (Sevens) plan lineup will include two package options: with 15 GB or 60 GB of mobile internet. In both cases, 500 minutes for calls within Ukraine and 15 SMS are included. A distinctive feature of the new operator will be the principle of calculating the subscription fee: U Mobile plans to charge it for a full calendar month — from the 1st to the last day — whereas the three largest mobile operators in Ukraine (Kyivstar, Vodafone, lifecell) use a four-week period.
The MVNO model and dependence on the host network
U Mobile will operate under the Mobile Virtual Network Operator model, which means using the infrastructure of one of the existing mobile operators to provide services to end subscribers. This defines the key limitation of the new brand: its real competitive advantage lies not in the mobile connectivity itself, but in the pricing of the package and the bundling of the SIM card with an existing fixed internet service from «Ukrtelecom». Telecom expert and digital technology consultant Oleksandr Hlushchenko, commenting on the launch for RBC-Ukraine, emphasized that U Mobile will depend on the host operator's network, and it is precisely the price of the combined package that will be the main argument for the subscriber.
Why «Ukrtelecom» needs a new brand: an expert's view
In Oleksandr Hlushchenko's assessment, the launch of U Mobile is a «late but logical attempt to protect its own subscriber base from churn and to tie the customer to yet another anchor service». If a user receives home internet and mobile connectivity within a single package, it becomes harder for them to switch fixed internet providers. For «Ukrtelecom», this is also an opportunity to increase average revenue per user (ARPU). «The goal here is not so much to earn on each individual SIM card, but to keep the household within its own ecosystem», the expert explained. At the same time, he drew attention to the debatable nature of the decision: «Ukrtelecom» already has a mobile asset — «TriMob» — with a license, an established subscriber base, and a history of market operation. In Hlushchenko's view, one of the reasons for creating a new brand rather than relaunching «TriMob» may be the outdated perception of the latter, which is associated with the 3G era. U Mobile allows for new positioning and the offer of a modern service lineup.
Competitive context and limitations
Hlushchenko does not expect the new operator to significantly change the balance of power in the Ukrainian mobile market. «On a long-established and oversaturated mobile market, U Mobile is unlikely to offer anything fundamentally new compared to Kyivstar, Vodafone, or lifecell», the expert stated. The main audience of U Mobile will be existing «Ukrtelecom» customers, and among the potential advantages are the combination of mobile connectivity and fixed internet, a single bill, and the ability to receive services from one operator. The expert does not expect a mass migration of users from the «big three» solely for the sake of a new SIM card and characterizes U Mobile as a niche product whose main task will be working with the existing customer base.
GPON and mobile connectivity: the energy-independence argument
Separately, the expert notes the potential of combining GPON internet and mobile connectivity in the context of the energy crisis and blackouts. «The 'Optics + Symka' model looks especially attractive», Hlushchenko emphasized. According to him, GPON has an advantage in terms of energy independence: with backup power for the router and optical terminal, home internet can continue to work during power outages. This makes the U Mobile combined package not just a marketing product, but a practically significant solution for an individual subscriber in conditions of an unstable energy system.
