Starting October 1, 2026, serious changes in the organization of railway communication are being introduced in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. The adjustments were prompted by a complex security situation and ongoing intensive attacks on the region's critical infrastructure. The state carrier Ukrzaliznytsia, together with regional military administrations, is taking emergency measures to minimize risks for passengers, causing some long-distance routes to be temporarily shortened or relocated to reserve hubs.

New Routes and Bus Transfers

Specifically, the changes affected the popular long-distance train No. 144/143 running between Sumy and Rakhiv. It will now depart and arrive daily at Konotop station instead of Sumy. For passenger convenience, Ukrzaliznytsia is organizing special bus services from Konotop to Sumy and in the opposite direction, with the cost of such a transfer integrated into the carrier's general tariff grid, excluding additional overpayments.

Combined Communication Pilot Project

In addition, a pilot project of combined rail and bus communication is being launched in the frontline areas of the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. If the operational situation or the threat of shelling makes safe train travel to terminal stations such as Sumy or Lozova impossible, passengers are promptly transferred to buses. Train and road transport movements are strictly synchronized: if one mode of transport is delayed, the connecting service is guaranteed to wait for passengers.

Safety and Alternative Options

Ukrzaliznytsia's monitoring centers monitor the threat level across all directions around the clock. Transfer tickets for the updated routes can be purchased through the company's official mobile application, while the full cost of travel documents remains unchanged. At the same time, suburban communication in the region operates in a flexible mode, and the Lyubotyn - Sumy line, fully restored in September, continues to operate stably. Experts recommend that citizens carefully check the schedule via chatbots or station ticket offices before traveling.
