The administration of US President Donald Trump has intensified diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and intends to offer official Kyiv a peace agreement involving concessions in the Donbas region. According to The New York Times, Washington is promising Ukraine potential economic benefits in return if Kyiv drops its objections to an agreement.
Negotiations in Oslo and Participants
The US proposal is set to be presented to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a face-to-face meeting in Oslo on October 20. US special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who will join the discussions remotely, will convey the White House position to the Ukrainian leadership. The meeting in the Norwegian capital is attended by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
The Ukrainian delegation, alongside the head of state, includes high-ranking officials and security chiefs. The team features Foreign Intelligence Service Head Rustem Umerov, Head of the Presidential Office Kyrylo Budanov, First Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Sergiy Kyslytsya, and Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Pavlo Palisa.
Trip of Trump's Representatives to St. Petersburg
Immediately following the consultations in Oslo, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to travel to Russia. The next day, they plan to hold meetings with Russian leadership in St. Petersburg to discuss further steps in the peace process.
According to US media reports, during the St. Petersburg meeting, White House representatives aim to secure the release of an American citizen who has been imprisoned in Russia for a long time, demonstrating practical results and the benefits of reaching agreements.
Significance and Potential Consequences
The plan proposed by the US administration marks a new phase in external partners' attempts to influence combat dynamics through economic incentives and diplomatic pressure. The issue of territorial compromises remains one of the most sensitive for the Ukrainian leadership and society, requiring careful coordination with international allies.
