In the night of August 20, 2026, as a result of a massive air attack by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on the Borodyanka district of the Kyiv region, warehouses associated with two major retail chains — VARUS and 'ECO Market' — were hit. According to RBK-Ukraine, citing official statements from the companies, the strike zone included a warehouse of a logistics partner of the VARUS chain, where part of the stock was stored, as well as the warehouse infrastructure of 'ECO Market'. The incident became part of a broader series of strikes on business and logistics infrastructure in the capital and the surrounding region over the course of one day.

Official positions of the chains

The management of both companies emphasized staff safety. Kristina Kovtun, CEO of the 'ECO Market' chain, in her statement, stressed that as a result of the morning shelling, the warehouse infrastructure was damaged, but no employees were injured. "The first question is whether everyone is safe. Yes. All our employees are alive and unharmed. And today that is the most important thing," she noted. In VARUS, meanwhile, it was reported that specialists, together with representatives of the partner company, are working to assess the damage and clarify all circumstances of the incident.

Store operations and damage assessment

Both chains assured that the incident did not stop retail operations: all VARUS outlets are open and serving customers according to the usual schedule; the company is taking measures to resume uninterrupted supplies and restocking shelves as soon as possible. At the same time, VARUS warned that due to warehouse damage, some product items may be temporarily unavailable in certain stores. Exact figures of material damage were not disclosed at the time of publication — their clarification, according to company representatives, is in progress.

Broader scale: other damaged objects

The night attack on August 20, according to available information, led to extensive destruction of business infrastructure and civilian objects in the capital and the region. During the day, enemy drones again attacked Kyiv: during the air raid alarm in the city, explosions were heard, the air defense system was operating, and as a result of a hit, a business center sustained damage. Other commercial and logistics facilities were also targeted — in particular, reports of direct strikes accompanied the warehouses of the retail chains 'Fara' and Yves Rocher, as well as the KLO oil depot. Thus, strikes on the logistics of retail chains became part of systematic pressure on economic infrastructure.

Contradictory data

There are discrepancies between the formulations of the parties and individual media outlets regarding the assessment of the degree of damage. Official statements from VARUS and 'ECO Market', as well as RBK-Ukraine, use the words "hit" and "damaged" warehouse facilities, while VARUS clarifies that the facility hit was specifically that of a logistics partner, not the chain's own warehouse directly. At the same time, the publication TSN uses a more categorical formulation in the headline and text — "destroyed warehouses of well-known retail chains". The difference between "damage" and "destruction" significantly affects the assessment of the scale of losses and recovery timelines, therefore, exact data on the volume of destruction and damage amounts remain unconfirmed by independent audit. It is worth noting separately that another incident is mentioned in open sources — a ballistic missile strike on the Toyota-Ukraine warehouse, dated August 5, which should not be confused with the August 20 attack on the VARUS and 'ECO Market' warehouses.
