For several days, a critical situation regarding the supply of drinking water has persisted in Marmaritsia and neighboring communities in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The cause is a major failure on the main water pipeline, which has led to a complete cessation of water supply to residential areas.
Causes and Scale of the Problem
According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky, the accident on the main water pipeline resulted not only from technical failures but also from insufficient responsiveness on the part of responsible officials. "This is a consequence of an accident on the main water pipeline, as well as an incomplete and untimely reaction by responsible officials," he emphasized in his statement.
The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the problem arose against the backdrop of ongoing military hostilities. The previous day, a Russian shelling left more than 126,000 households without electricity in the Dnipropetrovsk region, including the cities of Nikopol, Marmaritsia, Pokrov, and neighboring villages. This created additional difficulties for restoring infrastructure, including water supply systems.
Government Response
Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky has taken personal control of the situation and tasked the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration (RMA), Oleksandr Ganch, with ensuring a full resolution of the problem by today. "I have set the task to take urgent measures that will accelerate the repair of equipment on the main water pipeline, ensure the supply of technical water, and deliver drinking water to the local population," Koretsky reported.
Coordination of restoration work has been carried out since yesterday by the Minister of Infrastructure, Mykola Kalashnyk. He is personally monitoring the progress of repairs and the organization of water delivery to the affected areas.
Contradictory Data
There are discrepancies in estimates regarding the timeline for restoring water supply. On one hand, authorities state their intention to resolve the problem "by today." On the other hand, local residents report that even after partial restoration of water supply, quality and pressure remain unstable, and some areas continue to experience shortages. Furthermore, there is no unified information on exactly which sections of the water pipeline are damaged and how long it will take to fully replace them.
Context: Similar Incidents in Other Regions
The water supply problem is not limited to the Dnipropetrovsk region. On August 5, Kramatorsk and the settlements adjacent to it in the Donetsk region were temporarily left without water. This points to systemic risks for water supply infrastructure under conditions of military hostilities and the need to strengthen backup systems and response plans.

The Prime Minister has promised that "strict conclusions will be drawn in the near future" regarding officials whose inefficient work contributed to the delay in resolving the problem. It is expected that within the coming days, the results of the internal investigation will be published and personnel decisions will be made.
For the residents of Marmaritsia and neighboring communities, the issue of access to clean drinking water remains relevant for now. Authorities are organizing the delivery of water by special tankers, however, this is a temporary measure that does not solve the problem in the long term.
