Water supply and wastewater removal in Kyiv have traditionally been cheaper than in many other cities in Ukraine. However, the situation in the capital is changing: authorities and utility services have begun to review tariffs, which will inevitably affect residents' bills.
Current situation and proposals from "Kyivvodokanal"
As of today, Kyiv residents pay for water according to the current combined tariff, which amounts to 30.38 hryvnias per cubic meter. This price includes both water supply and its removal. However, the utility company "Kyivvodokanal" has conducted its own calculations and submitted a proposal to the city authorities for a significant increase in service costs.
According to the company's calculations, the economically justified cost of water supply should be 50.69 UAH/cu. m, and wastewater removal — 38.21 UAH/cu. m. In total, this gives almost 89 hryvnias for one cubic meter of water. At "Kyivvodokanal", the need for such a sharp price jump is explained by a number of objective factors requiring funding to maintain infrastructure operations.
Authorities' decision: a compromise option
The proposal to introduce a tariff of almost 90 hryvnias per cubic meter was rejected. The Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) stated that such high prices for the capital's residents would not be introduced. City authorities did not approve the calculations proposed by the utility company.
Instead of the maximum tariff, Kyiv residents will be charged a price of 63.79 hryvnias per cubic meter. This rate was already approved by the National Commission for State Regulation in the Energy and Utilities Sector (NKREKU) back in 2024.
Impact on the family budget
The transition to the new tariff grid will lead to a noticeable increase in expenses. Given the average volumes of cold water consumption in the capital, the amount in the bills for a typical family of three will increase by approximately 200–300 hryvnias per month. Thus, despite rejecting the maximum increase, Kyiv residents will face a doubling of the cost of water supply and wastewater removal compared to current figures.
