Prices for identical product categories in Ukrainian supermarkets can differ by dozens of hryvnias, and the gap becomes especially noticeable when multiple items for a daily menu are added to the cart. The Styler project (RBC-Ukraine) compared the online catalogs of four major retail chains — ATB, Silpo, Novus, and Auchan — as of November 6, 2026, taking into account current promotional offers. The goal is to show which chain is more profitable for buying specific staple goods and how realistic it is to save money if you don't stick to just one store.
Sunflower Oil: A Gap of Almost 14 Hryvnias for 500 ml
To evaluate the cost of the same volume, the editorial staff selected refined sunflower oil in 500 ml packs. It proved most accessible at Auchan, where the private label Auchan costs 49.40 UAH. Next is ATB with the "Svoya Liniya" product for 53.13 UAH, followed by Novus with the "Shchedryi Dar" brand for 64.62 UAH, and finally, Silpo with the same "Shchedryi Dar" for 65.99 UAH. Thus, the difference between the cheapest and most expensive offer is nearly 17 hryvnias for the same volume, which accumulates into a tangible sum with regular shopping.
Buckwheat and Bread: Where the Lowest Prices Are
Among grains, the comparison includes "Premiya" quick-cooking buckwheat from Silpo, which costs 54.99 UAH instead of 64.99 UAH on sale. According to Styler, the difference between the cheapest and most expensive grain in the comparison reached 43.71 UAH per kilogram. When comparing bread, the cost of the finished package was considered rather than the price per 100 grams of baked goods: the "Dobryi" rye bread at Silpo (300 g) was the cheapest at 15.59 UAH, followed by the Marka Promo loaf at Novus (225 g) for 19.08 UAH, the "Krystynopil Khlib" toast bread at ATB (300 g) for 24.80 UAH, and the yeast-free "Formula Smaku" at Auchan (300 g) for 30.80 UAH.
Assembling a Minimal Basket: 218.87 UAH, but at Four Stores
The comparison showed that the lowest prices for basic products are distributed among different chains: Silpo has the cheapest buckwheat and bread, Novus has eggs, ATB has milk, and Auchan has sunflower oil. If you assemble a conditional grocery basket consisting of a kilogram of buckwheat, a dozen eggs, one pack of milk, bread, and 500 ml of sunflower oil, choosing the cheapest found offer each time, the total cost would be 218.87 UAH. However, this would require visiting all four supermarkets, so before shopping, it's worth evaluating if the savings justify the transport and time costs.
Caveats: Promotions, Volumes, and Online Prices
The editorial team emphasizes several important caveats. Before buying milk, it is worth checking the volume, fat content, and processing method, and promotional prices can change at any time. Furthermore, the cost of goods in online catalogs sometimes differs from prices in physical stores, so the figures provided reflect the state of online offers as of November 6, 2026. The bottom line is simple: there is no universal "store for everyone," and maximum savings require either a readiness to walk through several chains or choosing one or two where your most frequent purchases are cheapest.
