President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has commented on the potential appointment of Anton Kovalsky as Prosecutor General on a permanent basis. According to the head of state, Kovalsky is currently serving as acting head of the agency, but no official discussions or meetings with potential candidates for this position have been held yet.
Personnel Changes in the Supervisory Agency
To recap, on September 17 of this year, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Anton Kovalsky, head of the Khmelnytskyi Regional Prosecutor's Office, as acting Prosecutor General. This appointment was preceded by a major scandal and the resignation of the previous head of the agency, Ruslan Kravchenko, whose dismissal was officially formalized by a presidential decree on September 15, 2026.
Reasons for the Resignation of Previous Leadership
The leadership change in the Prosecutor General's Office followed a large-scale investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) codenamed Operation Carthage. Against the backdrop of this investigation, Ruslan Kravchenko first resigned voluntarily and later publicly announced the submission of a notice of suspicion to NABU Director Semen Kryvonos.
Workflow During the Transition Period
In turn, acting Prosecutor General Anton Kovalsky emphasized that personnel changes and the replacement of top management should in no way affect the daily operations of the supervisory agency. According to his assurances, the work of the Prosecutor General's Office and regional prosecutors' offices continues as usual, and any procedural pauses or delays in performing direct functions are unacceptable.
